Ezra 1:1-7; Haggai 1; Matthew 6:33, 22:36-38
When the Jews returned from Babylon/Persia, they were purged from their idolatry but all was not perfect. They returned with high enthusiasm, urged on by King Cyrus to reestablish Temple worship, and began rebuilding the Temple. The project stalled when the locals who surrounded Israel put political pressure to bring the rebuilding to a screeching halt. Sadly, once distracted, the Israelites got wrapped up in their own lives and did not return to building God’s house. How are we the same?
