St. Luke to Send Four to New Orleans This Month

St. Luke 2013 NOLA Team

Four from St. Luke EFC will be working to turn a 100-yr.-old sanctuary into a Hip Hop community center for children in the inner city of New Orleans. Christopher Barnes, Gary Klotz, Diane Goodwin and David Ward will join with 53 other Free Church partners at Urban Impact Ministries the week of Feb. 17-23 for the NOLA 2013 project.

Urban Impact Ministries is a 22-year-old outreach to youth and families in the heart of the CityCenter section of New Orleans. Youth whose lives were redeemed from the violent, drug-ridden neighborhood in the 1990’s are now core members of Castle Rock Evangelical Free Church, sister church to St. Luke EFC in Wellington.

In 2005, UIM purchased land for a new community center, but plans for the building were put on hold after Hurricane Katrina. After the storm, Urban Impact partnered with EFCA TouchGlobal to begin the process of restoring our neighborhood. For three years our two ministries have hosted more than 12,000 volunteers from across the nation and around the world. They have now completed more than 20 work projects in the neighborhood from cosmetic repair to complete rebuilds.

During the past year a strong effort has been made to return to our roots while continuing the rebuilding process. UIM and Castle Rock have focused on building our youth programs back to pre-Katrina numbers. They are very excited about returning to our community center project as we are outgrowing our current facilities.

“We are excited that we get the chance to join in this great work,” said Pastor Christopher Barnes. “We want to see this neighborhood have the same type of community center and programs as we have seen developed at the CommunityChristianCenter in Wellington.”

The four from St. Luke will leave on Saturday morning, Feb. 16, to drive straight through to New Orleans. On Sunday, the group will receive training on serving the inner city poor and begin their work on Monday. “We have been told to come prepared for anything. We may be doing light construction or tutoring an inner city child,” Pastor Christopher said. “It will be quite an adventure for those of us from rural Missouri.” The group will be reporting on their trip in both worship services (8:00 & 10:45 AM) on Sunday, Feb. 24.
