HMAB 9: The Pitfalls of Promotions

Nehemiah 5:14-19

What Is the Greatest Test of Character?

ADVERSITY or ADVANCEMENT?

From your own experience or from someone mentioned in the media,
can you think of an example of someone whose
promotion “went to his/her head?

What usually causes advancement to backfire and harm someone?
There are a number of factors that make promotions challenging,
but one of the key causes is when pride creeps in.
People forget what God says about promotions…

Psalm 75:5-7
Do not lift your horns against heaven; do not speak so defiantly.
No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt themselves.
It is God who judges: He brings one down, He exalts another.

This could be paraphrased like this:
“Don’t toot your own horn! Don’t get on your high horse!
Remember your promotion didn’t just evolve.
Behind your recent exaltation was the sovereign hand of God.
You are the recipient of His goodness and grace.”

In Nehemiah 5 we discover the timeless perils or tests of character
that come with a promotion. We also get a chance to see the proper way to handle a
promotion when Nehemiah is suddenly promoted from General Contractor
of a building project to become Governor of Judea.
