A friend observed that this passage is quite significant, starting at the very first word – “children.” Right smack dab in a discussion of how being Spirit-filled would work out for husbands and wives, employers and employees, God speaks to children. Pretty phenomenal in an age when children were pretty well ignored.
Remember that Jesus scolded his disciples for their “W.C. Fields attitude”. They were shooing away children since Jesus had more important work to do. Rather, Jesus stopped everything and welcomed the children, saying, “Suffer the little children to come unto me and do not hinder them.”
To God, how children live out their faith was just as important as “big people.” In this passage, He emphasizes two things that would be the result of their being filled with the Spirit – their actions and their attitudes with Mom and Dad.
Pastor Christopher also presented a children’s message on Hebrews 13:17 called, Juggling Bowling Balls, focusing on obedience to parents without grumbling and complaining. The resentment toward one’s parent adds bowling balls to the burdens parents already carry.
